Chatty Cats: Gotchas, Treats and More!

Happy Friday! We celebrated another Gotcha Day this week – Dexter’s! We found him 12 years ago. Here’s the obligatory kitten photo. He was quite tiny, and you can see that he had a cut on his upper lip that turned into a scar. Dexter has definitely grown into a handsome mancat.

Father’s Day

Sophie: Hey, Lazy.
Mama: What?
Sophie: Get up. You need to go buy a Father’s Day present from me for cat dad.
Mama: Isn’t that your responsibility?
Sophie: I don’t believe so.
Mama: You know he can hear you.
Sophie: Oh good! It’s the thought that counts anyway. My work here is done.
Happy Father’s Day to all the awesome cats dads out there!

Acceptable Gotcha Day

Mama: Happy Gotcha Day!
Dexter: That was 12 years ago.
Mama: I know, but I like to acknowledge the day and you!
Dexter: Does it require me to do anything?
Mama: No.
Dexter: That is acceptable. You may acknowledge me.
Mama: Happy Gotcha Day, Dexter!!!!!

Cuddles or Treats?

Harley: Hmm, why did I come in here?
Mama: Not sure.
Harley: It had to do with cuddles.
Mama: Well, come on in!
Harley: My bad, it was treats. I came in here for treats.
Mama: How about treats then cuddles?
Harley: How about treats then treats?
Mama: Treats then cuddles then treats?
Harley: Treats then treats then treats?

Squeezable Beans

Mama: Look at that paw!
Olive: Where?
Mama: Your paw! It’s so cute!
Olive: I suppose.
Mama: And those toebeans are just squeezable!
Olive: No squeezing the beans!
Mama: Aww, sad face.
Olive: Fine, just a tiny squeeze.
Olive: Mama!
Mama: I couldn’t help myself.

  1. Happy Gotcha Day Dexter! What a cute baby you were, and a handsome mancat now. It is lucky I can’t put my hand through the monitor or I would squeeze those beans too, Olive.

  2. Well Dexter your baby photo is adorable and you blossomed (Mom’s word) into a mighty handsome guy didn’t you. You sure lucked out in the “happy home” department. We enjoyed getting updates from you all – as always!

    Hugs, Teddy and Mom too

  4. Hi Dexter. I just want to say that that was a Woodrow move. I think you’ve been spending too much time around him.

The photos were all pawsome this week, especially Olive’s toebeans and Sophie. Have a great weekend!

  5. OMC, y’all are so cute! I’m squeeing and squeeing and my kitties are getting annoyed. Happy 12th Gotcha Day Dexter!!!

  6. Cat purrs are great, but I like their trilling even more; and a combined purr and trill is delightful, too. … Whenever I observe anxiety in the facial expression of my aging mother, a typical senior, I can also witness how that stress suddenly drains and is replaced with joyful adoration upon her cat entering the room: “Hi, sweetheart,” she’ll say. I know that countless other seniors with pets also experience the emotional benefits of their animals’ presence. (Of course, the animals’ qualities, especially an un-humanly innocence, makes losing that pet someday such a heartbreaking experience.)

Many of us can appreciate the reciprocally healthy — perhaps even somewhat symbiotic — relationships that can exist between pet cats and their loving and appreciative human hosts, especially physically and/or mentally ill hosts. They have a beneficial influence over humanity that many people still cannot fathom; and this beautiful reality of their positive effect on their human hosts can also be beneficial to the animals themselves.

Still, the last I heard, a city neighboring mine had/has approximately 36,000 feral cats, very many of which suffer severe malnourishment, debilitating injury and/or infection by callously neglectful municipal government as well as individual residents who choose to remain silent. There seems to be a prevailing mentality out there of feline disposability; a subconscious human perception that the worth of such animal life (if not even human life in regularly war-torn or overpopulated famine-stricken global regions) is measured by its overabundance and the protracted conditions under which it suffers.

I believe that only when overpopulations of unwanted cats are greatly reduced in number by responsible owners consistently spaying/neutering their felines, might these beautiful animals’ presence be truly appreciated — especially for the symbiotic-like healthy relationships they offer their loving owners — rather than taken for granted or even resented.

Until then, cats may remain beautiful yet often misunderstood, prejudged and unjustly despised animals.

  7. That looks like a good treat Woodrow.. Happy Gotcha Day Dexter!!! You were cute then and you still are adorable. Have a nice weekend everyone. XO

  8. Happy Gotcha Day, Dexter! We loved seeing that photo of wee little you. And Olive, we agree … that was a seriously long week!

  9. Happy Gotcha Day, Dexter ! Claire is just like your mom, Olive, she can’t help herself when it’s about toebeans… Purrs
