Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday…and now today is Giving Tuesday!
#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.
Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

#GivingTuesday is the brainchild of a team at Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact. Meant to celebrate and encourage giving, #GivingTuesday has seen some pretty impressive numbers since starting in 2012.
GivingTuesday.org outlines 2015’s stats:
- 71 countries
- 700,000 online donors
- 1.3 million social media mentions
- 116.7 million dollars raised online
- 114 billion Twitter impressions
How to Get Involved
Not everyone is in a situation where they can donate money. But don’t worry! There are other ways to get involved with #GivingTuesday. Check out the “What’s Happening Near Me?” and “Ideas” sections at GivingTuesday.org.
You can also check out a previous post I’d written on ways to help that don’t involve donating money or volunteering time.
Commentathon
I’d like to participate in #GivingTuesday this year by hosting a commentathon right here. For each comment left on this post, I will donate $1.oo to a 501(c)3 animal rescue. Please leave a comment and tell me which group you’d like to nominate. If you don’t have a group in mind, just leave a comment so it will be counted toward the total donated.
I will use Random.org to select a charity listed in the comments and will then donate one dollar for each comment on this post to that animal rescue. Only comments left by Saturday, December 3rd at noon Pacific will be counted toward the donation total.
12 Days of Giveaways
I would also like to give back to readers this holiday season. I have felt such tremendous support from fellow bloggers and blog readers this past year and I would like to say thank you by hosting 12 Days of Giveaways over at my new blog, Cat Lady Alley. Check out the announcement post and be sure to enter any or all of the giveaways. The fun starts December 1st!

Who could resist a plea from that beautiful face (looking good, Olive!!)? I didn’t know there were volunteer opportunities as part of Giving Tuesday … off to check those out!
Our favorite charity isn’t a rescue – it’s the Bria Fund for FIP reasearch, which is a devastating feline disease that took our Cory at only 15 months old.

I would like to nominate Kitten Associates: http://kittenassociates.org/
Thanks for doing this! I don’t have a charity in mind. As long as it’s helping cats out, that’s great!
Thanks for helping. I nominate the Arrow Fund in Kentucky.
There are already such great charities named. We think any of them will be grateful for a commentathon donation!
Thank you for being so generous! The homeless kitties out there are lucky to have you on their side. If we are nominating rescues, I love my local rescue, A ReJoyceful Rescue in Mount Clemens, Michigan. :)

This is a wonderful idea! You have already been so generous by supporting our calendar for the TUFCAT ferals in South Africa, thank you!
Great commentathon, thanks for doing this!
This is so exciting! I think any of the groups would be so appreciative, but I would like to nominate Best Friends Animal Society NYC. You have a heart of gold and I think countless kitties would agree!
This is such a kind thing for you to do! I do the web admin for a volunteer group that works in partnership with our county shelter to increase adoption rates: Friends of Campbell County Animal Control. It’s a 501(c)3 and its website is http://www.friendsofcampbellcounty.org.
What a great way to celebrate Giving Tuesday! We nominate the group that helps with the shelter the mom volunteers with…that group is called Pound Pals. http://wacshelter.com/donate.html
Olive is a beauty. Thanks for sharing this information.
That is a lovely idea. Whichever charity you give to will be very grateful for the donation.
You’re such a beauty, Olive. And you are so generous. We would nominate Franklin County Animal Rescue in St. Albans, VT.
Hey pretty Olive ! Any help to any shelter is a great gift !
What a great idea! I think I’ll nominate PAWS in Norwalk, CT.
Hi!! This is such a great idea! I would love to nominate Tree House Humane Society in Chicago! They are an amazing no-kill shelter & they do so much for cats and the community. It is where I adopted both of my cats–Clovers & Fern!
You are always an inspiration. Thanks for hosting this commentathon!
KC Pet Project
What a wonderful way to celebrate giving!
This is such a wonderful thing to do, Rachel! We would like to nominate PAWS of Norwalk, CT. :)
We too are thankful for the blogging community. I nominate low cost spay/neuter clinic All About Animals Rescue http://www.allaboutanimalsrescue.org/ in Metro Detroit.
I try to give a little somethin’ every day of the year. Not necessarily money. Kindness, smiles, purrs, a friendly gesture, etc.. Being kind costs nothin’.
Purrs,
Seville
Pet bloggers are givers, in one form or another, aren’t they!
Thank you for all the comments. The commentathon is now closed. I’ll be using Random.org to select the rescue soon and will post about it later.
